Abstract: | Ina M. Beasly (née Girdwood) was born in 1895. She joined the Sudan Government Service in 1939. From 1942 to 1949 she was Controller, Girls' Education in Sudan and member of Council of Gordon Memorial College. In this capacity, she undertook many tours of inspection, venturing to the remotest parts of the country. This book is concerned not only with the establishment of girls' education, but also with the way of life of people and places in the Sudan in the 1940s. The editor has added biographical footnotes for Sudanese and British officials, footnotes and headings to clarify the text, excerpts from Beasley's diaries and appendices on girls' education in the condominium and on officials working in the field. |
