Abstract: | The view that the death and inheritance ceremonies of the Baganda of Uganda are 'pagan' and should be discontinued is splitting up the Church of Uganda community in Buganda and influenced the author to do research on Ganda ritual practices. Based on interviews, books, personal experience and observations, he describes Ganda death and inheritance ceremonies in some detail, focusing on funeral rites, mourning rites, succession ceremonies and the installation of an heir or heiress. He then offers a Christian interpretation of the rituals in question, and makes suggestions to the Church of Uganda on how it should deal with these rites. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
