Abstract:A content analysis was made of two series of English language textbooks published by Longman and College Press and predominantly used in Zimbabwean primary schools. A total of approximately 779 units of work were analysed for gender ratios in professional occupations and domestic chores, leading characters in stories, and sexist and non-sexist language. The study shows that both Longman and College Press textbooks reflect a male gender bias. While Zimbabwe has legislated for equality of the sexes, it has not effectively used this legislation to influence and encourage publishers to review their textbooks or at least to stop reprints.
