Abstract: | Before Africa's universities can assume their responsibilities towards the development needs of their countries, certain problems in the domain of research, teaching and service functions, and international cooperation must be solved. These problems relate, amongst others, to research funding, interdisciplinary research, the choice of topics for research and the kind of research undertaken, the utility of research, the role of the researcher, the adequacy and relevance of university curricula, interuniversity cooperation and exchange of staff and students. Perhaps the immediate task of the universities of Africa, however, is to establish good rapport with their governments so that they can appreciate what contribution African universities can make towards Africa's development.
