Abstract:This paper verifies the hypothesis that human interference with the environment through settlement is the underlying cause of the catastrophic landslide which struck Limbe (Cameroon) in September-October 1989. Normally, landslides occur due to heavy rains. The pyroclastic or scoriaceous cones of Limbe do not constitute a threat to mankind. Scoriaceous cones are known to be stable because they possess a high degree of porosity. However, human interference can make them dangerous. In the area of Limbe, the first step of human interference has been deforestation followed by the construction of houses on the loose, friable scoria with slopes that vary between 20 and 35 degrees. Then buildings sprang up. Some vital environmental variables such as the loose volcanic deposit, the man-made steep slopes, the forces of crustal instability, and meteorological factors were completely neglected in the process of site development. In conclusion, some measures are suggested which can be applied to minimize the effects of future hazards in this area. Bibliogr., sum. in English and French.
