Abstract:The brief treatise published here is a peculiar and interesting example of 'manaqib', a popular genre in Sufi literature which usually describes the spiritual biography of a 'wali', a 'friend of God', who has been endowed with extraordinary capabilities. The 'wali' whose exploits are described here is al-Majdhub b. Qamar al-Din (1796-1831), who left his native al-Matamma in 1821 to follow Mu.hammad 'Uthman al-Mirghani (1793-1852) to the .Hijaz. Differences between the two led them to separate on the way and al-Majdhub continued his journey alone. In Mecca, he contacted A.hmad ibn Idris (c. 1750-1837), who was to have a decisive influence on him. After long years in the .Hijaz, al-Majdhub returned to the Sudan, to the town of Sawakin, where he attracted a large number of the inhabitants to his teachings. The ten stories related here are reported by Ibrahim al-Rashid (1813-1874), a student of Ibn Idris. The Arabic text of the stories is presented as well as an English translation. Notes, ref.
