Abstract: | This work is part of the project 'World and outworld: social, economic and religious manifestations of the conflict with modern developments in tribal societies of the Sudan', carried out by the Forschungsgebietsschwerpunkt 'Ethnicity and Society' at the Free University of Berlin. Its aim is to capture some aspects of the ethnic boundary processes in northeastern Sudan, particularly among the Beja. Today the name 'Beja' is commonly used to indicate five large tribes or sociopolitical groups: the 'Ababda, who mostly live in southern Egypt but also in northern Sudan; the Bisharin, who live in the territory extending from Jebel Elba toward the coast up to Atbara; the Amarar, who live in the mountains between Sallala and Port Sudan; the Hadendowa, whose territory stretches from Port Sudan to Kassala; and the Beni 'Amer, who live between Tokar (Sudan) and Agorat (Eritrea). The book deals with the history of the Beja, Beja ethnography, Beja ethnic identity as represented by Arab and European authors, Beja self-representation, and ethnicity and Islamization. |
