Abstract: | Births are very important for the population growth of a country and good estimates of the birth rate are required to make reliable population projections. The purpose of this paper is to look critically at the available estimates of fertility in Botswana, and to see if it is possible to draw any conclusions about its development. The currently available fertility data for Botswana come from three different sources: the population censuses of 1971 and 1981, and the Family Health Survey of 1984. These yield estimates of the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 6.5, 7.1 and 6.5 respectively. However, the estimates for 1971 and 1981 are not fully comparable since somewhat different methods were used. A reestimation of the fertility rates for 1971 and 1981, using exactly the same method for both years, yields a revised TFR for 1971 of 6.8. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
