Abstract:On 1 September 1988 the 1988 amendments to South Africa's Labour Relations Act of 1956 became effective. They altered South African law and practice, inter alia, with regard to freedom of association. Using this as point of departure, the author outlines the legal developments concerning freedom of association in the labour field in South Africa, looking in turn at such aspects as the right to security of the person, the right to free assembly, the right to free opinions, the protection of trade union premises, the right to associate in trade unions, race, political rights, union security clauses, the democratic regulation of trade unions, the rights of unions to establish federations and to affiliate to international organizations, protection against anti-union discrimination, the negotiation of collective agreements and the right to strike.
