Abstract:This paper compares the post 1959 Cuban educational reforms with the efforts being made by the government of Zimbabwe since 1980 to use education as a sine qua non for transforming Zimbabwean society. The objective of the comparison is to explicate why and how Zimbabwean educational reforms are struggling with the ineluctable task of restructuring the inherited inequitable educational and economic system to attain a more egalitarian socioeconomic formation when Cuban reform efforts seem to have succeeded in changing the old order by establishing a more equitable educational and economic system in that country. After a chapter on the history and meaning of socialism in Cuba and Zimbabwe, and one on the major historical and institutional patterns that have influenced educational systems in Cuba and Zimbabwe, the paper describes the measures and initiatives taken in both countries to restructure the educational system. The final chapters examine similarities and differences in the two experiences, and current problems. Bibliogr.
