About person:Lansdell K. Christie (- 1965)
Abstract:This is a sequel to the article published in Liberian Studies Journal vol. 16, no. 1 (1991) about Landsdell K. Christie, the American entrepreneur and founder of the Liberian Mining Company (LMC), which he formed in 1945 to develop the Bomi Hills iron ore deposit in Liberia. This portrait of Christie gives substance to a figure who, despite the large role he played in Liberia's economy for over 20 years, has remained poorly known. This second part includes a number of anecdotes about events which the author either witnessed or was told of by Christie and other first-hand sources. Christie's life took two courses. One was that of the enterprising American pioneer in an African nation which he was, almost inadvertently, helping to reshape; the other was that of the Liberian iron ore magnate active in an America which knew little about iron ore and less still about Liberia. In this detailed portrait attention is paid, amongst others, to the changes which Christie and the LMC set in motion, Christie's generosity and his contributions to Liberian schools, his friendship with Liberia's President W.V.S. Tubman, his role in American politics and the 1960 presidential nomination of John F. Kennedy, his activities for the African-American Institute (AAI) of which he was cofounder in 1953, and his jewellery and antique collections. Christie died on November 16, 1965. Note.
