Abstract: | Ondo State (Nigeria) has an agrarian economy with little internal manufacturing capacity for the production of industrial goods. Consequently, industry remains at the periphery of the State's growth mechanism. It is the view of many scholars that the State's virtual dependence on agriculture has been responsible for its poverty. This paper examines the future prospects of Ondo State's industrial development in the light of its present industrial development pattern, problems and resource endowment. The introduction is followed by four sections. Section 2 examines the pattern of industrial development in the State (including the pattern of ownership and control of the identified industries and their locational pattern). Section 3 identifies the major obstacles to industrial development in Ondo State (inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, entrepreneurial inadequacy, and technical problems). Section 4 highlights the future prospects of industrial development in the State, arguing that the State has a bright prospect for industrial development given its abundance of natural (agricultural and mineral) and human resources. Section 5 contains policy recommendations. Ref., sum. |
