Abstract:Small industry and its promotion are regarded by many as a solution to the African economic crisis. The present study gives an overview of the theoretical discussion on small industry in Africa and confronts this with evidence from Sudan and a case study of Nyala city (West Sudan) conducted in 1987-1988. The underlying development advantages ascribed to small industry - labour intensity, income creation, capital mobilization, efficiency, flexibility, low import intensity, etc. - are analysed. The second part of the study examines the internal and external growth constraints on small industry, with the role of the government and its policies emerging as a major constraint.
