Abstract:The growing importance of the Suez Canal for Egypt's economy stems not only from the foreign currency revenues it generates, but also from the fact that it is the backbone of economic activities in the three cities of Port Said, Ismailia, and Suez. This article describes developments in Suez Canal traffic between 1975, when the Canal was reopened for international navigation, and 1988, and assesses the Canal's economic importance, paying attention to the movement of goods across the Canal, the major countries served by it, the relative share of Suez Canal dues in the total receipts of the Egyptian government, and Suez Canal dues as compared with the other main sources of foreign exchange (oil, workers' remittances, commodity exports).
