Abstract: | Although many researchers seem to generalize the ease of collecting and possibly publishing proverbs, the fact remains that proverbs are very difficult to collect if their actualization in a natural sociocultural and educational context is to be the basis of research. This study investigates the socioeducational significance of proverbs in an East African setting. The main objective is to demonstrate that in any socioeducational context proverbs are used for a purpose. Most proverbs have been obtained from informants in an induced context. The analysis is based on general principles which give room for a wide range of problematic contexts that demand the specific application of particular proverbs. After a short description of the artistic aspect of proverbs, their origin, and significance in East Africa, a number of proverbs are examined. Their themes range from consolation and vengeance to moral counselling and a philosophical view of life and the flexibility of human nature and character. They discuss scepticism, sociopsychological problems, and handle court cases. Political and economic issues and the question of solidarity are well taken care of. Life is viewed as a complex whole under one supreme being and people have to struggle and strive in order to live, and to improve their lives. Notes, ref. |
