Abstract:This bibliography and discography is intended as a guideline for those interested in digging into contemporary East African culture. Section 1 deals with popular culture in general and contains works raising various theoretical and methodological issues. Section 2 lists material relevant to eastern Africa, mainly Kenya and Tanzania. Section 3 lists recordings of East African artists available on the international record market in early 1991. The records are classified into three categories: 'taarab', a form of popular Swahili music; 'muziki wa dansi', Tanzanian dance music; and the various styles of Kenyan guitar music, with lyrics in Swahili and other Kenyan languages. The entries in the bibliography have been arranged alphabetically by author. A subject index has been included. Note.
