Abstract:This is a biography of Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane (1920-1969), who was the first President of Frelimo from 1962 to his assassination in 1969. Mondlane founded Frelimo from three diverse exile organizations and forged them into a unified movement with space for differences of opinion, views and approach, but focused on clear common goals - the liberation of Mozambique from Portuguese colonialism and the creation of a new nonexploitative society. He laid the philosophic basis for Frelimo's approach to the liberation struggle and for social transformation after independence. The biography contains sections on Mondlane's childhood and youth, secondary and postsecondary education in South Africa, his approach to the liberation struggle, higher education in Portugal and the United States, his marriage, his return to Mozambique, and the formation of Frelimo in 1962.
