Abstract:This study is based on fieldwork carried out in Red Sea Province, northeastern Sudan, in 1980 and 1986/1987 among the Beja, more specifically, among the Atmaan-Amar'ar. The book is as much built on reviewing the available written sources on the Beja as on field data. It includes the following chapters: 1. The Atmaan Amar'ar and their country; 2. From the Red Sea to the Nile Valley: an historical background to the Beja's resource situation; 3. Territory, resource control and solidarity among the Atmaan; 4. The responsible man; 5. Gender roles, marriage and brother-sister relations; 6. Getting grain; 7. Family herds; and 8. The dwindling resource base. An appendix deals with early Beja history.
