Abstract: | Most governments of Nigeria, both federal and State, have recently focused on the promotion of small industry as a strategy for employment creation and the fostering of a spirit of self-reliance. An important ingredient in the creation of employment is the development of entrepreneurship. However, for such employment to be self-sustaining, a dynamic kind of entrepreneurship has to be developed. This study, which is based on research carried out between December 1986 and January 1987 in Jimeta, Gongola State, examines traits which make for success or failure in business. Attitudinal and behavioural data of 172 entrepreneurs are presented and these cover business and social responsiveness, communication patterns, attitudes to modernization and patterns of change and innovation. It is shown that the retail subsector has a leading role in providing employment in Jimeta, followed by the food subsector. Micro firms with less than ten workers per firm provide the bulk of sectoral employment. Sole proprietorship seems to dominate forms of business structure. Business and social responsiveness seems to be low among Jimeta entrepreneurs. However, the unusually high literacy rate is crucial for any programmes aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills. Policy implications of the findings are discussed in conclusion. Bibliogr. |
