Abstract:	The epidemiology of five major water-related transmissable diseases which are likely to be affected by surface water resource developments in northern Nigeria is reviewed. The infections considered in detail are malaria, arbovirus infections, trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), onchocerciasis (river blindness), and schistosomiasis (bilharzia). Documented changes in disease patterns resulting from dam construction and irrigation projects are discussed, with particular reference to data from the West African Sudan Sahel savanna regions. The potential for negative health impacts developing in northern Nigeria is considered. Comment is made on possible control options and an organizational approach to study and manage these diseases is suggested. Bibliogr.
