Abstract:This study evaluates the credit delivery system of the Supervised Agricultural Credit Scheme (SACS) in Anambra State, Nigeria, focusing on loan repayment rate and technical assistance among smallholder maize farmer beneficiaries. The result of regression analysis shows that size of loan, farm size, income, age of farmers, number of years of farming experience, level of formal education, and adoption of innovations are significantly related to loan repayment rate, but that distance between home and source of loan, household size, and credit needs account for less. The result of multiple correlation analysis, used to assess the role of supervisors in the scheme, reveals that number of farmers supervised is inversely related to farmers' income while length of service as a supervisor, level of formal training in agriculture, and number of farm visits show a direct relationship. Given the immense benefits that can be derived from a well administered credit scheme, the article concludes with recommendations to this end. Bibliogr., sum. also in French.
