Abstract: | In recent years there has been a steady stream of publications on urban housing in Zimbabwe. Many of these have been on low-income housing and have focused on Harare, the capital. This article reviews this literature in order to synthesize what is known about urban housing in Harare. Part 1 focuses on the production of houses in Harare. It outlines the components of Harare's housing stock (private production of high-income housing; public sector house construction; serviced-plot programmes; unauthorized housing production) and the factors influencing housing supply (land and tenure; infrastructure; capacity of the construction sector; building materials; construction skills; rented housing). Part 2 deals with the consumption of housing in Harare (estimates of housing need; effective demand for housing; housing finance) and the exchange of housing. At the end, areas for future research are summarized. The authors conclude that many constraints on housing production which are said to be typical of developing countries are not serious in Harare, and that the public sector has had a major role to play in the housing market in Harare.
