Abstract:This article summarizes the state of archaeological research carried out at Ife, Benin and Old Oyo, Nigeria, within the last three decades, based solely on presently available radiocarbon dates, twenty-six for Ife, eight for Benin, and six for Old Oyo. More than ninety percent of the dates fall between the eighth and sixteenth century AD. The radiocarbon dates indicate that Ife predates Old Oyo and Benin if two earlier dates from the fourth and the fifth century AD are accepted. If they are rejected, it is at least clear that Ife and Old Oyo were contemporaneous while Benin came later. Bibliogr.
