Abstract: | This article gives an overview of the development of Soviet South African studies during the periods of 'stagnation' and 'perestroika'. It outlines the problems with which South African studies in the USSR were faced until the end of the 1980s, and argues that despite 'glasnost' and 'perestroika' many things have remained the same in the academic sphere, notably in the humanities. However, the changes which took place in both the USSR and South Africa have contributed to a revival of South African studies in the Soviet Union and a sharp rise in academic activities connected with South Africa. |
