Abstract:After a short historical overview of African filmmaking and its main themes, the author discusses the works of five West African filmmakers: Souleymane Cissé (1940, Mali), Safi Faye (1943, Senegal), Gaston Kaboré (1951, Burkina Faso), Idrissa Ouedraogo (1954, Burkina Faso), and Ousmane Sembène (1923, Senegal). A list of African films available in the USA has been added at the end.
