Abstract: | This study examines the influence of location on the effectiveness of adult literacy centres, in conjunction with factors responsible for variations in the centres' effectiveness in rural and urban areas in Borno State, Northern Nigeria. 25 independent variables are considered, grouped under four aggregated factors, viz. learners' background, instructors' quality, noninstructor centres' quality and distance. The measures of effectiveness are dropout rate and successful completion rate. The sample comprises 900 adult learners and 36 instructors in 36 literacy centres, located in rural and urban areas. Data were gathered from the subjects through questionnaires and observation in 1987 and 1988. T-test statistical analysis is employed to compare the performance of rural and urban groups on the measures of effectiveness and multiple stepwise regression analysis is used to identify the relationship between the independent factors and the two response factors. The findings reveal that urban literacy centres are more effective than rural literacy centres in retaining adult learners and enhancing their collection of literacy certificates. They also show that instructor quality constitutes the most significant factor for all four regressions. In conclusion, suggestions are made for the improvement of adult literacy effectiveness.
