Abstract:The paper discusses the experience of Kenya with the floating exchange rate system and develops a currency composite index capable of achieving a competitive value of the Kenya shilling vis-à-vis other currencies. The application of the composite index approach for Kenya suggests that use of the technique has policy attractions in other African countries. Since its adoption in Kenya in 1982, it has facilitated the achievement of a more rational exchange rate of the Kenya shilling and made it easier to manage the shilling exchange rate by disguising small exchange rate changes.
