Abstract:The purposes of this paper are: 1. to present a number of general technical and environmental issues relating to the effects of dam construction and operation; 2. to introduce major problems of technical irrigation development, with the purpose of raising issues for analysis by social scientists; and 3. to discuss the public health aspects of dams and irrigation works, and possible engineering responses to overcome these health risks. After the introductory chapter, ch. 2 discusses trends in dam construction. Ch. 3 examines trends in irrigation development and food supplies. Ch. 4 discusses irrigation and health.
