Abstract: | This paper is a short account of some of the work the author has done over the last several years with respect to the current conflict in the Sudan, the central theme of which is the north-south religious, racial, and cultural dichotomy. The paper centres largely on three interrelated sets of activities. One concerns a sociohistorical analysis of Sudan's national identity crisis which is behind the conflict; the second covers two works of fiction ('Seed of redemption', 1986, and 'Cry of the owl', 1989), which are attempts by the author to communicate the themes of identity formation, its mythical foundations, and its policy implications to a Sudanese readership so as to neutralize divisive myths and shed light on unifying realities; and the third relates to the role of participant-observer in a peace process that the author initiated jointly with General Olusegun Obasanjo, former head of State of Nigeria, in 1987, a role that entailed facilitating communication between the conflicting parties, learning more about the conflict, and attempting to bridge the differences. |
