Abstract: | On the basis of ongoing fieldwork in several selected urban centres in Yorubaland, Nigeria, the author describes Yoruba burial practices: the appointment of the leader of the committee to organize the funeral ceremonies, pre-burial mourning, the interment, after-burial mourning and subsequent periodic mourning, the funerals of chiefs and other important people, the death of a young person, and death in childbirth or pregnancy. There are differences of detail in the funerary customs of the different communities, within broad uniform principles. Many factors influence the composition of the group involved in the funeral arrangements and the scale of the funeral. The status of the deceased is one such factor. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
