Abstract: | This paper presents a general view of atmospheric pollution in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. An examination of the main sources of air pollution in Dar es Salaam - industrial pollution, especially through chemical manufacturing and cement production; domestic heating, cooling and biomass combustion; and vehicular traffic - is followed by a discussion of the influence of air pollution on the urban climate. Although the effects of human activities on the global climate is a controversial subject, there is general consensus that these activities have an effect on the climate of the urban centres. In conclusion, planning implications are discussed. There is a need for comprehensive air pollution control strategies in the many mushrooming African urban centres. However, very few steps have been made to contain the social costs of industrialization in African urban centres. Bibliogr., sum. |
