Abstract: | The Topnaar of Namibia are the only inhabitants of the Namib desert. From December 1991 to June 1992, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted among the Topnaar of the Kuiseb area and the Topnaar of Sesfontein. The information gathered during this survey is presented in the two plant catalogues published here. The plants are arranged by family in alphabetical order. Following the scientific plant name, the herbarium specimen collected by the authors is mentioned. If existing, a Nama name is given, as well as the common names in English and/or Afrikaans as found in the literature. Each plant is briefly described and its distribution in the area concerned is given. For each plant, information on its use, the used parts and the preparation and processing method is presented. These uses are also compared with uses in other areas or by other people as found in the literature. |
