Abstract:In 1981 the author undertook research aimed at compiling a set of conventional aggregate economic data for the Transkeian economy (South Africa). It became evident that the limited statistical information available was of a doubtful nature. Closer scrutiny of the published data, compiled and provided mainly by the Bureau for Economic Research, Cooperation and Development (BENSO), revealed technical errors and inconsistencies in the estimates. A critical evaluation of these statistics became necessary. The author suggests ways in which qualitative improvements can be made and proposes a methodology for the compilation of national account statistics of a semimonetized economy, in this case Transkei.
