Abstract:The paper presents the results of an exploratory analysis examining the association between selected variables describing commodity dependence, sources of comparative advantage, and general economic policies and performance in 13 overlapping samples of 42 developing countries. The data refer to the economic circumstances of the countries c. 1981. The findings support widely held concerns for the development problems facing commodity-exporting countries. They also, however, raise basic questions about the extent to which export instability hinders economic growth, and about the efficacy of pursuing multilateral and other proposals to advance the process of export diversification in countries whose principal comparative advantage lies in exporting primary commodities.
