Abstract: | Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa have been the subject over the centuries of a considerable number of novels, short stories, plays and poems in the principal European languages. This study, which is based on further investigation in an area scarcely charted with bibliographies, is designed to supplement, as well as to update, the author's earlier article on the subject, published in 'Africa', a. 40, n. 4 (1985), p. 637-663. The review contains sections on ancient writings; 16th, 17th and 18th century European writings; the legend of Prester John; 19th century songsters and pseudo-travel literature; the 20th century to 1940; the early post-World War II decades; post-Ethiopian Revolution writings; and the Ethiopian civil war, and stories of refugees.
