Abstract:This volume is the first of a projected series of six volumes on the Arabic literature of Africa. It deals with the Arabic writings of eastern Sudanic and Saharan Africa (mainly the modern Sudan) and provides a biobibliographical overview of this literature up to c. 1900. It comprises twelve chapters organized by theme or period: the Sudanese Nile Valley before 1820, chronicles and related materials, the writings of the Turkiyya, popular poetry, the Sammaniyya tradition, the Idrisiyya tradition, the Sanusiyya tradition, the Khatmiyya tradition, the writings of Isma?il al-Wali and his descendants, the writings of the Majadhib, the Hindiyya, Qadiriyya, Sa?diyya and Tijaniyya, and the writings of the Mahdiyya. A general bibliography including Arabic, Turkish, Malay and European-language writings has been added at the end. Contributors: R.S.
