| Abstract: | Eight different time series are available on the volume of slaves shipped to the Americas from the Portuguese colonial coastal urban centre of Luanda, Angola, during the 18th and the first third of the 19th century. However, they are limited in their chronological scope and do not include the totality of the extant documentation. The present essay establishes a more precise estimate of the number of captives shipped through Luanda by the Portuguese from 1710 to 1830 by drawing upon both the earlier time series and the large body of documentation still extant in the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino in Lisbon, the Biblioteca da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, and the Arquivo do Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro. This is done by listing all the available primary sources with quantitative information on slaves exported per annum and comparing these figures to corresponding yearly numbers found in each of the previously published time series. The resulting recalculation barely changes the overall volume of the Portuguese slave trade from Luanda. Only a few minor refinements on the number and timing of captives exported are warranted.
