Abstract: | This paper reviews the definition and the importance of joint ventures (JVs) as well as the determining factors for their formations, with particular reference to agribusiness in sub-Saharan African countries. The focus is on the prospects for JVs in the agro-processing and marketing subsector. The study is based on a review of current literature and on in-depth interviews conducted during 1990/1991 with executives of UK-based companies engaged in the agribusiness industry. The study shows that African countries have increasingly attempted to create an attractive environment to encourage foreign investment in general, and JVs in particular; and that where JVs have been successfully established, the host countries have benefited substantially. The paper concludes that while the various reforms underway in terms of political change, liberalization of regulations, privatization, and other measures taken by African countries should encourage JV formation, much remains to be done as regards the proper implementation of policies, the promotion of entrepreneurship, the strengthening of regional markets, the debt crisis, and the improvement of the infrastructure, all of which would require substantial support from the international community.
