Abstract: | Today, Islam is recognized as one of the major religious traditions of South Africa, though Muslims form less than 2 percent of the total population of the country. This paper focuses on some issues which are of central concern to the Muslims as a minority community. These include politics, economics, education, social life, and Muslim family law, better known as Muslim personal law. Special attention is paid to this last issue. Muslim personal law is presently not recognized by the State. Nonetheless, it is 'accommodated' through the constitutional protection of a free civil society and has been administered by Muslim community institutions. The paper considers some of the major difficulties encountered by Muslims as a result of conflicts between provisions of South African law and Muslim personal law, including problems concerning marriage, divorce, maintenance, adoption, and succession.
