Abstract:Text in Italian. English sum.: Colonial or 'modern' law in Africa was essentially intended to modify people's behaviour. But it had to compete with former legal practices, which generated occasional reinterpretation. This article focuses on urban land tenure practices. It argues that the African town presents a composite picture, which is the result of a hybrid law. The author compares the situation in Brazzaville, Congo, to a theatre play. He analyses the actors on the urban land scene, studies the complexity of their roles, and proposes using this approach to consider the problems of land tenure control in African towns.
