Abstract:This study examines relationships between a head teacher's leadership behaviour and the degree of teacher commitment to work. It also explores factors that are likely to influence teacher commitment to work. In order to investigate these questions, an exploratory study was conducted in Swaziland. The results of the study indicate that a head teacher's authoritarian leadership behaviour is inversely correlated with teacher commitment to work. Second, a head teacher's supportive leadership behaviour is significantly and positively correlated with teacher commitment to work. Finally, factors which appear to have a significant effect on teacher commitment to work include a head teacher's supportive leadership behaviour, a teacher's qualifications, the location of the school, and the quality of teaching materials and facilities. Data for the study were gathered from a total of 82 full-time BEd students at the University of Swaziland. The majority of the students had taught for not less than 5 years in secondary schools.
