Abstract:This study estimates the quantity of coffee arabica smuggled from northern Tanzania (the Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions) into Kenya. The results suggest that about 12 percent of arabica coffee produced in northern Tanzania between 1969 and 1985 was smuggled into Kenya. This is about seven percent of the aggregate arabica coffee produced in Tanzania in that period. This is an annual average of about 4000 metric tons. The annual average value of coffee smuggled at Kenyan prices is about 103 million Kenyan shillings, or about eight million US dollars. Bibliogr., notes, sum.
