Abstract: | This volume contains the text of a public lecture delivered at the Third Triennial Conference of the Nawair-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria (Youth Wing), Lagos, on 25 July 1993. The booklet is an attempt to explain Islam's attitude to military rule. It looks at four basic principles of political science in Islam, namely 'tawhid' (unity of Allah), 'khilafah' (representation), 'shura' (consultation) and 'al-Akhirah' (the hereafter). It examines the relationship between the ruler and the citizens and the duties of both in society. It compares the performance of Nigerian politicians to that of their military counterparts. Among the questions it attempts to answer are: Is military rule better suited to avoid corruption and intolerance? What does the Koran say about military rule? Are the military corrupt? |
