Abstract:The fishes of the Okavango Delta represent a valuable natural resource for Botswana. During the 1980s increased demand for fish resulted in a marked escalation in fishing efforts in the Delta. In order to update information on the existing and future development of the Delta's fish resource, a workshop was held in February 1991. The objectives of the workshop were to discuss various fishing activities in the Delta and the commitments and constraints associated with sustainable utilization of the resource. This paper summarizes the main topics discussed during the workshop: commercial fishery, recreational fishery, fish farming, fisheries training, and the role of the DWNP (Department of Wildlife and National Parks). It was clear from the workshop that timely implementation of an integrated fisheries research programme and a management strategy with sufficient flexibility to improve on policies as more research becomes available is needed.
