Abstract:An examination of some recent African research attempting to address a key question on the relationship between schooling and postschooling employment productivity in the informal sector. Two key policy implications become clear. First, African policymakers must address themselves to the integration of formal and informal learning. Related to this, education must be accepted as a lifelong process. Second, policymakers must recognize the legitimacy of the informal sector in the African context. Not only is this sector the major employer (aside from agriculture) in most countries, but it also makes a critical and often unacknowledged contribution to national production levels.
