About person: | Joseph Camillo Kumbirai (1922-1986) |
Abstract: | Joseph Camillo Kumbirai (1922-1986), poet, priest, teacher and critic, is one of the most prolific Shona poets in Zimbabwe. His poetry spans the period between 1965 and 1980. His themes are inspired by his tireless commitment to the moral, sociopolitical and economic affairs of his people. His voice is an acknowledgement of the problems of colonized and independent indigenous people. Kumbirai in the past has been celebrated for his imaginative blend of traditional Shona and modern poetic devices and his moral thrust. A profile of his poetry shows the development of the consciousness of the artist from a moral idealist to a nationalist. Bibliogr. |
