Abstract: | The major objective of this study is to assist the Gezira Board in launching an adequately based plan to develop milk production on Gezira farms through the provision of information on marketing issues. The problems investigated include the lack of knowledge about the scale and location of demand for fresh milk, the economics of the interregional trade of milk, and ways of improving the marketing system so that it can cope with the proposed expansion of milk production. The study was confined to the region of the Gezira Irrigation Scheme and the contiguous areas in Central Sudan where the production and marketing of milk is closely associated with the Gezira Scheme. Data was obtained in the study area in 1990/1991. Neoclassical demand theory, the theory of spatial market equilibrium and elements of the concept of structure-conduct-performance were used for the analysis. |
