| Abstract: | A major pillar of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) in Nigeria was the diversification of the country's export base so as to increase non-oil export revenues and reduce the excessive dependence of the export sector and the economy on crude oil, whose market was believed to have entered a long period of slow growth since 1982. The findings reported in the study show that the diversification programmes of Nigeria's trade policy and economic reform measures during the SAP have recorded some measure of success. Non-oil export volumes and earnings increased and some degree of diversification into minor commodities has taken place. However, several problems remain, most notably the continuing preponderance of agricultural products in non-oil exports and the ineffectiveness of manufacturing in Nigeria's export trade.
