Abstract:This paper documents how the process of rural transformation, as occurring broadly through the spread of the cash economy and capitalist relations and through direct State intervention, has affected the nature and extent of women's involvement in field-related work in rural areas of Liberia. Rice production, as the most important activity of over half of the country's population, is used as a case study in the analysis of women's roles in agricultural production. Three major issues which determine women's position within rural Liberian society are considered: access to land, the sexual division of labour and the organization of labour, and the control of crops and revenue. It is suggested that Liberia's rice deficits partially derive from general labour shortages in which female labour constraints, further exacerbated by male migration in some areas, feature predominantly.
