| Abstract: | This study examines the economic, social and political rationale of the proposed trans-Kalahari railway project including the perceived benefits associated with the exploitation of mineral and agricultural potentials of Botswana and Namibia, and its potential as a transit route which could enable land-locked SADCC countries to reduce their transport dependence on South Africa. It also looks at the feasibility of the railway project and concludes that the viability of the project depends essentially on bulk traffic which, in turn, depends on Botswana's exploitation of its coal deposits. The construction of the railway, it is argued, should await the exploitation of the Botswana coal deposits and the independence of Namibia. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
